Review: YOSSI AND JAGGER
Based on a true story, the film "Yossi & Jagger" is a story of love between two officials of the Israeli army on the Israeli-Lebanon border. Yossi commands the company, and Jagger directs a squad. Both of them tries to find a place for their love in the middle of a rigid and oppressive system while they fight a cause in which they do not necessarily support. While the introvert Yossi does not want to question the system and prefers to maintain his love in private; Jagger, adored by all for his humor, prefers to make the things out in the open. On the verge of finishing his military service, he would like that Yossi leave the army with him. The tension grows between the lovers and is on the verge of exploding when both are sent to a dangerous mission.

It is interesting to mention that this film is among the first in the Israeli cinema to touch so openly the subject of the homosexuality, especially to place it in the Israeli Armed Forces. We see Jagger being so carefree and playful, and we cannot help but to like him and to 'support' the relationship that Yossi and Jagger share. We can observe the taboo on homosexuality, as nobody really mentions it throughout the film, especially at the very end. The picture of Jagger in the album was a very moving moment for me.

Despite the fact that this film is created with a low budget, it shows us a real look into the life of mandatory armed services that all Israeli young people go through. Although the army barracks is quite different from that of a kibbutz setting, one can nevertheless detect a sense of community shared by the soldiers on the frontier. One can observe the relationship between the male and female soldiers, the Jew and the Arab soldiers (yes, there are Arab soldiers in the Israeli Army), and also the conditions that the soldiers have to put up with whilst on active duty.
