The Danish movie, "Festen," or "Celebration," is about a family gathering for the father's 60th birthday party. The eldest son (who is acted by a very hot actor, Ulrich Thomsen) comes to the party with a bone to pick at the guest of honour. Following the popular Danish tradition of multiple toasting to the guest of honour, the son discloses a rather unpleasant fact, which sends shockwaves through the family members in attendance. They try to send him away, and to continue the dinner (or celebration) as if nothing has happened. The son keeps coming back under a pretense that he is all right, except we continue to be informed more in details about the unpleasant fact. The family members are unable to leave because the hotel staff, showing their support for the son, has hidden all the keys.
It's a battle which lasts throughout the day into the night, where the family members try to make sense of the unpleasant fact. As the morning comes, we see a result which effectly turns around the celebration. It is like a celebration of the truth, no matter how unhappy it can be. It is a celebration where people acknowledge the truth, and a lot of hard feelings and burdens are released. Everyone, especially the son, feels as if they are relieved. I am not surprised that it has won some awards, and I am definitely gonna try and see if I can buy this movie in region 2 format with Danish subtitles. Wish me luck!
