Review: FUCKING ÅMÅL
"Fucking Åmål," or "Show Me Love," is about two teenager girls living in the town of Åmål in Sweden. They are the opposites: we have Elin who is a popular girl getting involved with local crowds and getting in trouble, however, she is quite bored with life. We have Agnes, who is a loner, and she happens to have a crush on Elin. We see the typical loner, who is afraid to even admit anything and is very shy. She stays away from the crowds and hangs out with a girl in a wheelchair. Soon, it is Agnes' birthday, and her parents urge her to give out invitation. Obviously, she does not heed this advice. Yet somehow, the invitations are discovered and spread through the school. Only the girl in wheelchair comes, and Agnes is all furious about it. She insults the girl in the wheelchair, who ends up leaving the party.

Rumours spread through the school that Agnes is a lesbian, and Elin and her friends place a prank call on Agnes. Somehow, Elin feels all bad about it, and she leaves the party, ending up seeing Agnes. They start to become friends despite the judgements of their friends. They both go through some issues, before they come to a resolve in the end. It is a good movie, and it is one of those typical coming-of-age movies where we see the characters becoming true to their identities.

One thing that struck me was when the younger brother asked his mother what a "lesbian" was, and how the mother calmly replied the question without getting angry at all. She simply explained how it meant as if it was two women in love, just like mum and dad. It seemed like she had a cool approach to the issue, and I wondered how often it really did happen within the Scandinavian society, which is said to be one of the most open-minded people in the world?
